Transit
Production methods that opens up and invites
In Transit, traditional latex casting steps are loosened up to be re-contextualized. In the process, plaster, mold and supportform cooperate towards new connections. The plaster becomes secondary in the intended result. Instead, the mold and supportform turn in to the essential part and becomes both an asset and a belonging to the aesthetics, functionality and the use of the design craft.
Erik Åstrand’s process is inspired and shaped by the everyday object’s biography and contexts. One method is to let everyday objects become a potential tool by borrowing from already established craft processes, rather than inventing something new. Another method is to open up for being designed by the moment.
