Staples and Squares
Reused photographic paper collected from waste paper bins (sculpture 260 x 180 cm).
Lisa Sterner focuses on physical material and brings attention to the creation of the work. Through the ‘learning by doing’ method, Sterner tries to let go of control and expected results, which is both a battle and an interaction between hand and mind.
In the work Staples and Squares, thousands of paper squares are stapled together. By being attentive while working, allowing thought and action be interwoven, the phrase ‘think first, act later’ is called into question. Sterner believes that understanding in many cases requires a mixture of theoretical knowledge and practical action.
