Design
BFA
So it is time for yet another group of design students to finish their three years of BA studies with interesting, important and beautiful degree projects. However, the students’ last semester did not look like the usual semester. They had barely begun their work until life and their studies changed drastically. Covid19 caused parts of society and the entire HDK-Valand buildings to close down. Students who planned to carry out their projects on site in the school premises and workshops now had to re-plan. Dialogues with users and external partners became complicated. In many cases, mapping of environments and full scale work became impossible. Production of prototypes in wood, textiles and metal was severely limited. Easy to lose motivation? Not these students. It became a feverish activity as many had to adjust methods and tools. Kitchens were transformed into workshops, new software had to be learned and the ingenuity saw no boundaries.
This extra layer of problem solving has been handled by the students with good courage, and it has resulted in a broadening of their knowledge. Designers from the Corona generation are clearly survivors who know how high goals can be achieved with alternative methods and new ways of thinking. And they seem to be able to handle stress and uncertainty brilliantly. The students’ work has a consistently high international class. Sustainability issues and the creation of useful, thought-provoking and smart solutions permeate the work. Each project is a product of lots of decisions involving content, meaning and, of course, colours, shapes, surfaces, materials and expressions. They have all landed in the creation of a defined experience for a real target group. The projects solve problems, make you feel better and provoke thoughts . Welcome to this year’s degree projects at Design BA!
