Antarctic Thought Experiment forefronts the human ability to fantasize and imagine, while also problematising this fantasy and imagination of place, as a condition of colonial behaviour. The project departed from initial dialogues with academics who hadn’t visited their object of study – the continent of Antarctica. My intention was to interrogate these transcripts, drawing upon metaphors and analogies the participants used, and translating these into visual tropes and scenes through the lens of popular imaginaries of Antarctic ‘culture’: explorer journals, horror movies, nature documentaries and other human observations.
To create this surreal blended-fantasy, I used knitted props, costumes and sets which offered an allegorical relationship to widespread colonial fantasies which obscure and entangle Antarctica.
