Rethinking The Little Mermaid

Text om detta projekt finns endast på engelska

Kolbrún Inga Söring’s research wants to critique cis-heteronormative presumptions and expectations of behaviour, appearance and desire. Focusing on body modification and desire they draw on situated knowledge as an attempt to reveal their own implication in the construct of hegemonic sociocultural norms. With the method of autotheory Söring rethinks, reimagines and expands upon the story of The Little Mermaid – through a trans, gender non conforming queer lens.

At the core of this project lies a captivating tale of a teenager who is told to perform the identity of a mermaid but desires most to perform the identity of a human. A series of euphoric and dysphoric experiences follow as the tale tackles the harsh reality of someone who does not conform to hegemonic social standards. The lengths that the teenager goes to in order to obtain their true identity can in many ways be likened to experiences of those who defy expectations of cis-heteronormative appearance, behaviour and desire.

The work explores different methods, mediums and modes of publicness, via the website rethinkingthelittlemermaid.org that records the processes and developments of the project.
